"Sixteen Month Old Child Dies of Suffocation"
Glen, the 16 month old son of Mr and Mrs Simion (Simeon) Ellison of West Candor, dies of suffocation Tuesday afternoon
at their home on the back road, north of the West Candor Railroad Station.
The story is a sad one and happened in an unusual manner. Mrs Ellison was doing the family washing using a machine driven
by a gasoline engine. The engine ran out of gas. She went to the supply can and found this contained only a small amount,
about a teacupful. She emptied this into another can used to keep kerosene in, and set it back in its place. She then went
to the store on the main road to get some more gas, leaving the baby in the crib, and a six year old daughter Lalie, who had
suffered a broken arm about 2 weeks before upstairs. While the mother was gone Lalie came downstairs and found the fire in
the stove was out. She started to rebuild it, using only one hand as the other was in a sling. She put some kindling in the
stove and then took the kerosene can and poured some of its contents on which she supposed was kerosene, of course there was
an explosion and the remaining portion in the can took fire. She started to carry the can outdoors, going through the hallway,
or cloak room, where clothing was hanging. The flames set fire to the clothing. She then ran to tell her mother leaving the
baby in the crib. The house was soon filled with smoke and doubtless the baby began to cry and drew large quantities of smoke
into its lungs. Mrs Ellison hastened home as soon as possible and ran in and grabbed the baby and took it out of doors and
endeavored to resusetate it, but to no avail. It was dead. Other neighbors learned of the appalling disaster and rushed to
the home and put the fire out. It had done considerable damage, burning out the door casing and through the ceiling into the
second story. The funeral of the child will be held at the home on Friday. The father and mother and one sister and a half
- brother survived.
Downed While Skating
Little Richard Ellison breaks through the ice on the upper dam and is taken out a corpse. This afternoon little
Richard Ellison son of Richard Ellison ,carpenter, residing at No. 12 Frances Street went skating with his brother and some
other boys upon the upper dam above Lazette Street bridge. At about two o'clock, while skating at the extreme upper end ot
the dam and over the middle of the channel where the ice was not more than half an inch thick Richard broke through and disappered
from the sight of his horrified companions under the ice. His brother and others qickly brought boards from the bank near
by and tried to reach him but were un able to do so. Mr G H Ackerman and Mr D Edson in the employ of Sheriff Reed were at
work at the lower end of the dam and as soon as they were notified bastened with axes and ice-poles to the scene of the accident.
Noticing the boys cap under the ice a short distance below the point where he broke through. Mr Ackerman made a hole
throught the ice and thrusting down the pole in the water where only about five feet deep caught his ice hook the first time
into the boys clothes and brougt the body to the surface. It was at once apparent that life was extinct the body having been
under the water about half an hour. Mr Wm. Burgess took the lifeless body of little Richard in his sleigh and carried it to
the house of his parents and the father who was at his work was notified and hastened home. The family were overwhelmed with
grief by the sudden and unlooked for calmity, and have the keen sympathy of their neighbors in their distress. The boy was
only nine or ten years old and a brother of the little girl who was nearly killed by a stone thrown by a tin peddler last
summer. We learn that two other boys Geo. Walker and ---- McGovern broke through the ice this morning at almost exactly the
same spot but were rescued later. We learn since the above that there were hopes of resuscitating the child.
NOTE: This was John J Ellison's brother his mother and father were Richard B Ellison and Villetta King Ellison
He died December 23, 1879 was born in 1868. He had 8 siblings John J, George, Nettie, Edward, Olive, Frank, Amanda and
Eddie. They lived in Auburn, NY.
